What the heck is RSS?

Depending on which version of RSS you’re referring to over the last decade, the acronym RSS can mean a number of things. The current common definition for RSS is Really Simple Syndication. In the past it’s been defined as Rich Site Summary and RDF Site Summary.

An RSS feed is a stream of data that is similar to the contents strip on a newspaper, in that alongside the title and page location of a story often there is a small picture and an abstract from the text.

RSS feeds typically let content providers emit summary details of a webpage, so that a reader can access updates without viewing the actual page. So what? Well, at its most useful an RSS feed lets a reader keep track of their favourite websites without having to remember to visit the actual site.

It’s necessary for the human reader to be using software that interprets RSS information, and displays that information in digestible chunks. This software is called an RSS reader, or RSS aggregator. Additionally, many of today’s web browsers and a few web portals offer this functionality.

The content of an RSS feed boils down to this:

  • Full text content of the original piece, or just a summary.
  • Metadata or ‘header’ information containing the author’s name, publication date and so on.
  • And often there are media ‘enclosures’ like audio (which leads us to Podcasts) or video content.

The coded content of an RSS feed is written in something called XML, or Extensible Markup Language. This is simply a language that can define its own constituent parts. Or, it can make its own rules and definitions up, as long as the resultant file meets certain validation criteria. XML lets us separate content from style, so that core content can be repackaged in a number of ways. So, in other words: write once – view many!
